Key Points from a
Nigerian Workshop

A recent Nigerian online workshop was loaded [packed with good information]. Here are some of the key points for me:

I have never taken time to appreciate myself. Hence, the session on self-appreciation was helpful. I realized that I have a whole lot of good in me and that I should be able to appreciate myself even when others don’t. That is exciting!

Leadership is not about titles. It is about being able to solve problems and get things done in whatever capacity we find ourselves.

Co-Counseling sessions are not just for fun or a ritual that must be performed. We get to sharpen ourselves as counselors. We can do this by discharging. Also, the more sessions we have, the more we can sharpen our listening skills.

Participating in fundamental classes is key to being a good counselor.

The break-out session on discouragement was especially impactful. I have learnt that no matter what people say or do to discourage me, I must be determined—and this will eventually bring success.

The following dos and don’ts for counselors was helpful for me as someone new to RC practice:

  • Allow the client to listen to their own mind.
  • Don’t finish the client’s thoughts or words for them.
  • Trust the client’s mind to know what it needs to do.
  • Don’t give advice.
  • Don’t try to fix or solve the client’s problems.
  • Don’t suggest solutions you yourself have employed.
  • Pay attention to your client.
  • Keep everything done in sessions confidential.
  • Don’t spend time worrying if you are “enough.”
  • Don’t try to be the best counselor they have ever had. Be all they need at that time.
  • Be comfortable with silence.
  • Learn to always listen and listen.
