Dear climate coordinators,

this is a short report about how I did thematize climate (cl.) emergency
and cl. coordination in a community gathering in Berlin / Germany with
ARP Carsten Filor leading the gathering - and requesting me to do lead
this short input.

I held a short talk about

* how early defeats capture us in feelings of isolation, hopelessness
  & powerlessness,
* how we can use the gathering for discharging early defeats (Carsten
  did also talk about it before in the gathering - very helpful!),
* why "cl. change" is a trivialization and "cl. emergency" says more
  about reality,
* what the role of cl. coordinators is and how RCers can make use of them.

Then we did a mini about connection and about discharging early defeats.

It worked very well. I learned from Diane the "easy" tone, that opens up
the climate topic to people - understanding, that it is first of all
about themselves and their development. It was not the first time, that
participants told me after, that now they understand the connection
between the unbearable feelings around the cl. topic and the early
acquired, chronic material they carry.

It satisfies me as cl. coordinator, when people start to have ideas, how
to move forward with feelings and thoughts around the cl. emergency and
understand it as a chance to overcome massive obstructions (feelings).

Hello fellow climate-co-ordinators! We need a short form, maybe CCs?
I am CC for middle-class - CC for MC.
At the meeting my good and new was that I'd just finished an article I hope
will be in Present Time. Actually it's not really by me, it is a transcript
which I have edited of two meetings of our international middle-class team.
The members talk about what they see happening in their countries. It is
very interesting and widens our perspective. I see this as part of my job
of trying to encourage middle-class co-counsellors (including me) to
realise how little we know, to face reality about what's happening in the
world, and to commit ourselves to the shared effort to change it.

Thanks Diane for inviting us to write.

I’m the climate co-ordinator for the Kent and Sussex Coastal region in England. I lead
a monthly support group for everyone in the region to discharge and think
about the climate emergency.

We’ve been looking at the Unified Goal for Climate, discharging on the
highlighted part and also working on ending other oppressions.

Last month I did a report back from Tim Jackin’s workshop on the Unified
Goal.

This month we’ll be doing a Think and Listen.

What’s working is that, after a year of meeting, the people who regularly
attend the support group are moving forward on the subject.

One of my challenges is figuring out the best way to keep the balance with
working on early material, while also looking at the current situation
around the climate crisis.

I am the climate emergency co-ordinator for the West London Region.  Our group meets once a month at two different times so everyone can get to it at least every second month.  We are a mixed class group, including a working class man who is learning to install solar panels.  Everyone from all social classes are becoming more enthusiastic about the group.

Our RRP is beginning to take more interest in the climate and the unified goal.  In our recent Regional Teachers and Leaders workshop my assistant and I were given time to discharge in front of the workshop and talk about the group.

We are discharging towards our five year plans.  We started by looking at what our personal lives might be like in five years, then looking at what might be the climate situation in five years.  Having laid this groundwork we started to look at how our activism needs to move in the five years ahead.

Hello fellow Climate Coordinators,

Summary:  Here are the specifics of how I used Think and Listens and formed
a Regional Climate Team to move our community forward in the past year.  Basic
ideas like aiming for thinking and tracing our feelings about the crisis to
early sources have needed patient guidance.

Report:

My highlights of being part of the Climate Coordinators group have been the
sense of community and compassion for all of us, as we try so hard to meet
this climate challenge.  And the many good ideas of what we’re trying.

Here’s a report of what I’ve tried in the Wisconsin region of the US.

I started about a year ago, inviting anyone to join me who wanted to do
Think and Listens on the climate.  Only one person did, but we did it for
several months, mostly weekly.

I learned that I need to teach people the difference between a session and
a Think and Listen. I gave us questions for us to focus on, allowing us to
let our minds go where they want to go. Since we’d have a mini either
before and after—we experimented—we were to mainly keep reaching for what
we think, even if it begins with “I don’t know.”  It wouldn’t be trying to
access our feelings, it would be to try to keep reaching for our thinking.  I
needed to actively help the person who joined me, and she appreciated my
helping her steer her mind out of her anger and discouragement.  We both
agreed that it’s different from what we’re often trying to do with sessions.

The kinds of questions I used were things like:  “What do I think is
effective in talking with people about the climate crisis?”, “Who would I
want to talk about it with?”, “What have I already done?” “What would I
like to do?”, “Where have I seen climate change and racism linked?”  “What’s
next for me?”  Our responses were really interesting!

We had two rounds of either 5 or 10 minutes apiece, often with two
different questions, plus one mini of 10 minutes. We tried to keep our time
together limited to 45 minutes.

Then when I became a Climate Coordinator, Diane encouraged us to involve
more community members.  So I offered a monthly 90-minute group to
discharge and see what we can do.  We’ve had monthly meetings since
February.

The first four times were open meetings; different people came each time.
After the Climate Coordinators workshop I invited those who were willing to
make a four-month commitment to form a Regional Climate Team.  I wanted
them to decide to be together.  Ten of us attended out of our very small
region, partially because I followed up with all those who'd not RSVP'ed.
They all joined.

I give them at least one assignment to do during the month.  One was to
counsel directly on the climate situation in at least one session for the
month, and to look at the early material the feelings are connected to.  I
was surprised to find that it was hard for many to do that.  So in the next
class I sent them off to do a mini on it and then share with the group what
they identified. My goal is they do it regularly and ask their counselors
to do it with them.  And to use Think and Listens with people in their
lives.

I’ve been using Present Time articles, notes from workshops, webinars and
our Climate Coordinators Calls for encouragement and guidance. Last time I
asked people to go into minis and review all that we have to offer, of the
many RC principles and methods we have learned, to bring to the climate
crisis. Then select one that they would like to focus on this month.  Everyone
had something different; mine was to use articles in Present Time to keep
my perspective—and to share what I’ve learned with others. Homework
completed!  :-)

Think and Listen group at our July 1st workshop

We were thinking about next steps as climate coordinators.

These are some of the ideas.

·         Staying connected to home.  One idea is to grow food which helps
give hope to people.

·         Participate in the African Climate Week, and lead about women
putting their thinking forward

·         Discharge on not having what we need.

·         Hiking – it helps connect to people

·         Have a goat that dies of old age!

·         Work with people in the region to set goals, in particular 5 year
plans.

·         Make decisions about what is strategic to have as a focus and
goals about. Not try to do everything – don’t have a mosaic of efforts.

·         Ask friends what they think she’d love as a goal

·         Work on building a local young people’s movement around climate
and inviting them into the center of the work.

·         Find a buddy in her group to work with.

·         Don’t take on all the roles. Let someone else organize, maybe
someone else lead.

·         Get people discharging on taking action

·         Set up a drop-in discharge group about taking action

·         Discharge on the racism she’s being targeted with.

·         Rest but have a timeline to return to the work.

·         Put things into the calendar so that she doesn’t take on too many
things.

·         Get other people to do things.

·         Discharge on disappointment with other people not doing more.

Regional group of RC folks who want to take climate leadership.  How to proceed, monthly meetings, discharge and plan.  In and out of RC.

How I can be of support to leaders taking action. Back leadership for open evenings about Climate and Social Justice

Area summer class series on climate - support the teacher for the class

Work with regional leaders and ARPs about how we can work on climate in ongoing classes

Learn more about the electrical grid and issues related to integrating renewable energy such as solar

Create a team at work that is tight and where people can share their thinking related to climate action

Gravitate towards activity that helps me to connect with nature

Reach out to my list of RCers in my region by the end of July

Continue climate support group/Wygelian group combo to have a mix of discharge feelings and thinking/taking action

Have regular involvement with a local summer program for high schoolers from diverse backgrounds

Revise my 5 year plan including notes on what I've done well, make changes based on what I've learned

Decide to focus on fewer projects and make them larger, my role larger

Bonjour les très chers leaders.
C'était très  bien pour moi de faire partie de cette rencontre du programme
des coordinateurs du climat.
C'est un moment d'inspiration pour moi d'écouter ce que les autres ont
fait. et me faire plus d'expérience sur ce que j'avais déjà fait.

Et me décharger plus ici et avoir plus de la force pour encourager mes
collègues du climat de ma région du Togo.

C'est très inspirant.
Mon opinion c'est de continuer à construire des relations solides dans
l'esprit des objectifs unifiés.

Pour communiquer  de bouche à oreille avec nos voisins immédiats, et dans
nos rencontres en ligne pour que tous le monde s'imprègne bien au
programme du climat.

Pour que cela ne se passe pas sur une seule personne.

Donc sur ce nous les leaders du climat du Togo ,
Et tous les leaders du climat du Bénin .
nous avions décidé de continuer à travailler  entre nous mêmes,et faire
plus de séances des décharges. régulièrement pour nous encourager sur tous
les idées qui peut nous aider à s'exercer pour finir avec les différents
problème catastrophiques d'inondation d'eau pluviale.
Au Togo et au Bénin .

et nous allons continuer à promouvoir la plantation d'arbres dans nos pays
pour la protections de l'environnement. avec un programme durable. Sans
oublier tous les leaders du climat. Pour une meilleure avenir

It was very good for me to be part of this meeting of the

It's an inspiring moment for me to listen to what others have done.
and get more experience of what I've already done.

And to unburden myself more here and have more strength to encourage my climate

It's very inspiring.
My opinion is to continue building strong relationships in the spirit
spirit of unified goals.

To communicate by word of mouth with our immediate neighbors, and in our

My major highlight is thinking about my next step as a Climate Coordinator.
This made me write a more comprehensive blog (

pendant de nombreuses années, et je suis actuellement une personne de
référence de la région.

pour mettre fin à la crise climatique, à nous contacter.

The RC Community commits to ending the oppression of disabled people by
discharging the hurts that devalue disabled people’s lives and limit our
view of what it is to be human. We also commit to building connections with

SUMMARY
Introducing myself as climate coordinator for middle class. I think our
role of keeping things going so that profits continue to be made applies to
the climate. We use our skills to pretend that the crisis is not as bad as
it really is. I want to encourage middle-class leaders everywhere to run
workshops, webinars and classes about this. If we can discharge our fear
and despair, and give up any way in which we minimise the crisis, we will
be able to face the facts full of hope and connection.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
Ich stelle mich als Klimakoordinator für den Mittelstand vor. Ich denke,
dass unsere Rolle, die Dinge am Laufen zu halten, damit weiterhin Gewinne
gemacht werden können, auch für das Klima gilt. Wir nutzen unsere
Fähigkeiten, um so zu tun, als sei die Krise nicht so schlimm, wie sie
tatsächlich ist. Ich möchte Führungskräfte aus der Mittelschicht überall
dazu ermutigen, Workshops, Webinare und Kurse zu diesem Thema zu
veranstalten. Wenn wir unsere Angst und Verzweiflung ablegen und jede Form

Dear all,
I'm excited to take on the role of climate coordinator for middle-class. I
haven't got moving on it yet, but I have recently been doing climate work
in SAL and in our region (Cornwall and SW England) that has helped me think
about what we need. But I want to hear from others about that too. If you
are a leader of middle class, or a middle-class leader, I am likely to
contact you to ask for your thinking. No need to wait if you have ideas
already - get in touch.

I am a white woman aged 77, a grandmother of three, living in Bristol,
England. Since I retired from lecturing in a low ranking university, where
I led the trade union branch, I have focused on climate activism and on
writing so-far-unpublished political novels. I have been doing middle-class
work in RC for over 30 years. I love it. Seán Ruth (our ILRP) points out
that there's no such thing as 'middle-class liberation' - the only
liberation for the middle class as a class will be the ending of class
oppression and the lies and divisions that go along with it. But I can
guarantee that middle-class work in RC is *personally *liberating. It has
made a huge difference to me.

The middle class has the role of making society run efficiently and of
calming and containing conflict.  We have been bribed and threatened into
doing this, and the main group that benefits is owning class, a small
proportion of the population. How do we play out our role in the climate
emergency? As an activist, talking to many people in the street and
elsewhere, I find middle-class people skilled in greenwash and denial.
'Greenwash' means pretending to be protecting the natural world while
actively destroying it. We middle class have been 'highly' but narrowly
educated, so we are not usually outright climate deniers. But 'greenwash'
is a form of denial. I hate to see my people using our skills to speak up
for airport expansion, writing to defend new fossil fuel extraction,
pretending that the danger is less  than it really is.

I believe we all do some of this, because it's difficult to discharge
enough to face the truth without losing hope and connection. I hope in my
role as climate co-ordinator to work with leaders of middle-class to plan
workshops, webinars, evenings and so on to get people discharging all the
old distress that makes us willing to play our old role of pretending that
it is possible to go on with 'business as normal'.

I am looking forward to hearing (and learning) from you and helping you
think what you can do to get middle-class RCers active, determined, hopeful
and connected.

Dear Climate Coordinators,

I am one of the Climate Coordinators for Jews (together with Cherie Brown
and Julie Saxe-Taller).  I posted the following note to the Jewish list and
am posting it here as well:

With the adoption of the Unified Climate Goal at the World Conference last
August, Cherie Brown, ILRP for Jews, has been actively engaged in moving
the work on climate forward for Jews in RC.

In January, following up on results from a survey posted to the Jewish
list, Cherie and Rachel set up support groups for Jews to discharge on the
climate emergency.  There are a total of seven support groups.  One support
group is focused on discharging specifically on the Unified Climate Goal.
The other six support groups are focused on discharging on doing climate
work as Jews in the wide world and bringing RC tools to wide world climate
work.

These support groups are one way that Cherie is helping us prepare for the
international workshop on Jews and the Climate Emergency that will be

Recently, leaders of these support groups met with Cherie to share and
discharge about how it has been going in these groups.

Here are some things we shared about what we are trying in our groups and
what we are learning about this work:

  - It can be useful to start with what we love about the earth and about
  nature.
  - We have been discharging on the following questions:  What have you
  been doing on climate?  What do you want to do?  Where do you need a hand?
  - Noticing that we have each other and that we get to remember each
  other as we do this work. Connection is the most important thing.
  - We did a "Think and Listen" on what has been going well, what are
  lessons learned, and where do you struggle.
  - Where does anti-semitism surface in the work and confuse us -- both
  the Internalized Oppression and external anti-Semitism?
  - Some key issues people worked on center around being visible and
  facing terror and discouragement.
  - The issue of unity is very key for the climate initiative.
  - Some in the group are scared active and some are scared passive.
  - The importance of having non-Jewish allies in the work.
  - Giving people time to pay attention to the extreme weather people are
  experiencing locally.
  - Discharging on what our actual security is, as Jews, and the pull
  towards upward mobility.  Seeing relationships as our real security.
  Discharging on the possibility of saying no to anything that we don't
  actually need.

des activités de la coordination du climat chez-moi moi au Togo.

Chez moi au Togo
il y a des communautés respectifs.
de la capitale jusqu'à l'intérieur du pays.

Pour mieux faire la réalisation de la coopération des activités dans tous
les communautés respectifs au Togo.

nous avons déjà un groupe des leaders des communautés chez nous et nous
sommes Rassemblez entre nous les leaders.

Et au début de notre rencontre.  j'ai  d'abord passer les informations sur
tous les directives nécessaires de la communauté internationale RC .

sur ce pourquoi ils est important de travailler et de se faire soutenir
dans notre pays le Togo

pour avoir des équipes de personnes capables dans chaque communauté  pour
organiser :
des évènements en RC et aussi en dehors d'RC .

 des cercles d'écoute et des sessions entre nous les membres. et aussi
faire les invitations à tous les amis de la localité respectives au
Rassemblement des rencontres des activités du climat de chaque communauté.

Donc dans notre objectif unifié. au Togo
Nous avons déjà un groupe de tous les leaders de chaque communauté.

et nous , nous réunissons   une fois par mois Au sujet des activités de la
coordination du climat au Togo.

Dans nos rencontres nous continuons toujours , les sensibilisation, et les
encouragement .
puisque  en  réalité ce n'est pas facile. la réalisation concrète des
activités du climat. Donc nous faisions  les sessions de nos  décharges
sur plusieurs points , a s'avoir,
les peurs, et appréciations. et  tous les difficulté qui nous dérange a
faire notre réalisations  sur  le sujet du climat.

(L'expérience) c'est-à-dire que après les séances des sessions . il y a
toujours une nouvelle idée qui arrive pour nous renforcer et tous va bien
avec  une joie.

parfois  ses différents types de  difficultés nous transforme a une
expérience qui nous aide à  comprendre mieux notre environnement pour mieux
agir positivement. Au sujet du changement climatique .

tous les leaders des communauté Au Togo sont des personnes clé  où  les
chefs de la circonscription du climat au Togo.

J'ai invité les amis d'un quartier pour les raisons de trouver la solution
du passage d'au pluviales dans le quartier de dévé a djagble. Pour éviter
l'inondation d'eau pluviale dans le quartier de dévé djagble . j'enverrai
les photos.

Les plantations des arbres ont déjà fait depuis l'année dernière  2023 .
sur les sites publique de kpogan  avec les amis a Lomé  .

Je prévois  encore la plantation de 50 pieds d'arbres en ce mois de juin
dans un village de Commune des Lacs le weekend du 9 et 20 juin 2023  avec
les amis en dehors de RC vous aurez images après la réalisation dans quelle
que jour avenirs.

Dans ma région le Togo pays francophones de l'Afrique de l'ouest.

I am HOKAMETO MISSIGBE, coordinator of climate activities in Togo.

For the necessary information on the concrete achievements of the climate
climate activities in RC and outside RC in Togo.

First of all, we are two coordinators in Togo.

We work in perfect harmony to manage climate activities in
Togo from the capital to the interior.

accident that kept him on site for a while. My health is getting
better and better with the sessions and rehabilitation).

Ok now I'm here to present you with the real facts
of the activities of the climate coordination chez moi moi in Togo.

At home in Togo
there are respective communities.
from the capital to the interior of the country.

To better achieve the realization of cooperation activities in all
respective communities in Togo.

we already have a group of community leaders at home and we are
and we're bringing the leaders together.

And at the start of our meeting, I began by passing on information about
all the necessary guidelines from the RC international community .

on why it's important to work and be supported
in our country Togo

to have teams of capable people in each community to
organize :
events inside and outside RC .

listening circles and sessions between us members. and also
issue invitations to all friends in the respective localities to the
Gathering of the meetings of the activities of the climate of each community.

So in our unified goal. in Togo
We already have a group of leaders from each community.

and we meet once a month to discuss climate coordination activities in Togo.

In our meetings, we always continue to raise awareness and
encouragement .
because in reality it's not easy. the concrete realization of climate
activities. So we've been doing the sessions of our discharges
on several points, to get to know each other,
fears, and appreciations. and all the difficulties that bother us to
to make our realizations on the subject of climate.

(Experience) i.e. after the sessions there's always a new idea
there's always a new idea that comes along to strengthen us and all goes well
with joy.

sometimes these different types of difficulties transform us into an
experience that helps us better understand our environment so we can better
act positively. On the subject of climate change .

all community leaders in Togo are key people where the
heads of Togo's climate constituency.

I invited the friends of a district for the reasons to find the solution
of rainwater runoff in the dévé a djagble neighborhood. To avoid
the flooding of rainwater in the neighborhood of dévé djagble . I will send
photos.

Tree planting has already been done since last year 2023 .
on the public sites of kpogan with friends in Lomé.

I'm planning to plant another 50 trees this June
in a village of Commune des Lacs on the weekend of June 9 and 20, 2023 with
friends apart from RC you will have images after the realization in which
future day.

Hello coordinators,

In Seattle, we are organizing RCers to join and support an Earth Day march to support strong proposed local climate legislation to reduce emissions in big buildings (one third of our GHG emissions and the fastest growing source) and fight opposition from large corporate offices in our downtown area.  Individuals who are part of other organizations will march with their organizations, but many RCers are marching together as SAL/UER.  

The Areas and Regions are still mostly meeting on Zoom, and still in the process of developing their policies for meeting in person.  We decided that for this march, it will be up to each individual whether or not to mask, and how close to be to others.  

I sent out the following to the local Community:

"I see participating together in this march as a way to inform RCers about the Unified Goal (see bolded paragraph from the goal below), give us a chance to discharge about putting this paragraph of the goal into action, and show up in a meaningful way to an important climate action:  

We in the RC Community commit ourselves to encouraging and supporting every one of us to act against and discharge any distress that might keep us from playing an active role, as large and radical as necessary, to resolve the climate emergency. For most of us, this will involve uniting with others to publicly oppose irrational policies and visibly support rational solutions.

I think we could offer Co-Counselors several options of how they could participate, based on what makes sense given their experience with climate actions and whether they bring a friend or not.
1.    RCers could have an RC buddy that they do mini-sessions with throughout the march.  Their focus is on discharging about being a part of the action.
2.    RCers could have an RC buddy that they work together with to listen to other people participating in the march or watching from the sidelines. (Listening Projects)
3.    RCers could bring a friend (not an RCer) new to climate actions.  Their focus for the march is that relationship, and helping their friend understand RC/SAL/UER.
4.    RCers who attend with their children, and RC allies for the family groupings.
5.    RCers who carry our banners.

Those of us going will meet an hour before to discharge, divide up the different roles, and prepare for the listening projects we will do to engage people standing on the sidewalks and watching the march.  Here are the questions we will use for the listening projects.  

— How concerned are you about climate change?
— Should Seattle/Washington State continue to be leaders on climate policy?
— What are your main concerns regarding climate change?
— Do you think we are in a climate crisis / climate emergency?
— How are you impacted by the climate crisis?
— Do you think the climate crisis affects everyone equally?
— Do you think racism is related to the climate crisis?
— Who do you think is profiting from the climate emergency?
— Who should pay to fix the climate crisis?

We will also bring some 11 x 17 versions of our favorite climate cartoons to attach to the back of the signs, along with some SAL prints.  We’ll meet for an hour after to discharge as well.

Je suis très heureux de rejoindre le groupe des coordinateurs du climat.
Mon pays le TOGO est dans une situation dramatique en ce moment de la
saison des pluies.
Nous vivons depuis plus de dix ans dans des situations diverses
La montée des eaux marines
Le changement climatique
La pandémie de grippe et autres maladies infectieuses pandémiques. La mer
est au dessus de la ville de Lomé. C'est une menace pour les habitants et
les villes qui jongent au bord de la mer.
Tous ces gens seront dans les années à venir des déplacés climatiques dans
leur propre pays. En plus les riverains sont obligés de vivre des
expériences qui menacent la survie de leur existence. La terre ne produit
pas et la pêche aussi. Les eaux sont salées compte tenu de la montée. La
pénurie des denrées alimentaires de base sont rares et chères. Car
l'agriculture est devenue difficile la terre est aride. Dans cette
situation la pluie ne suive pas la pluviométrie originale. En ce moment ou
j'exprime mon désarroi des habitants des zones urbaines sensibles à
l'inondation sont à la merci de tous les fléaux.
Le social n'existe pas.
Les maladies infectieuses et pandémiques sont à l'origine. Je suis très
touché et ému en regardant tous ces désastres écologiques qui menacent la
survie des espèces animales et végétales qui sont en voie de disparition.
Dans l'espoir de remédier à ce drame mes membres de mon secteur et moi nous
descendrons sur le terrain pour apporter nos aides en les inculquant nos
outils de la Co-écoute sur le changement climatique et la protection de
l'environnement.
Je suis déterminé à protéger l'environnement et la sensibilisation des
membres de mon secteur à jouer ce rôle d'activistes que nous sommes.

I am very happy to join the group of climate coordinators.
My country TOGO is in a dramatic situation at this time of the rainy season.

We have been living for more than ten years in various situations

The climate change
The flu pandemic and other infectious pandemic diseases. The sea
is over the city of Lomé. It is a threat for the inhabitants and
cities that are located by the sea.
All these people will be in the years to come climate displaced in
their own country. In addition, the residents are forced to live
experiences that threaten the survival of their existence. The land does not produce
and fishing too. The waters are salty because of the rise. The
basic foodstuffs are scarce and expensive. Because
agriculture has become difficult the land is arid. In this situation the
situation the rain does not follow the original rainfall. At this moment when
I express my dismay of the inhabitants of the urban zones sensitive to
are at the mercy of all the plagues.
The social does not exist.
Infectious and pandemic diseases are at the origin.
I am very touched and moved when I look at all these ecological disasters that threaten the

Our local activist group had been planning a sign up event to support a
national action in London this April. I had to step up and take an active
role in organising, setting up and attending due to unforeseen
circumstances. Our action included a survey and sign up to get more people
on the streets outside Parliament to register their dissatisfaction with
how the government is tackling and handling the issues.

Last Saturday, our developing RC area assisted this local action. We have
experience of doing Listening Projects on racism. Using these experiences,
we supported the climate activists to engage with the public. The RC group
stopped and listened to anyone willing to engage with us. The activists
took over those who expressed an interest in hearing more, or finding out
how they might participate further: including getting people to sign up for
the national event, which was their aim.

What we might do differently: have mini sessions just before the Project.
Where it worked well: the RCers were available and listened to anyone
willing to stop. We funnelled those with attention on this topic to the
activist group who had more detailed information and offered to keep these
people informed about the bigger action in April.

There was no question of either group recruiting from each other. We were
two organisations working togather side-by-side.

*Older People Backing Younger Climate Emergency Leaders*

Hi wonderful Climate Emergency Co-ordinators.

In recent years I have noticed that I can play a key role as an older
person, in backing young leaders in the climate emergency. By backing young
leaders, I mean listening to them, appreciating them, and participating in
the actions that they create for change.

I came into RC as an activist when I was in my twenties. I was
participating in the women’s nuclear disarmament movement. Discouragement,
fears and what I now realise were deep feelings of powerlessness had me
pull back from actions in my community. Being listened to, discharging and
having space where I was respectfully listened to enabled me to be active
again.

I recently received some great guidance from two younger climate emergency
leaders, in the RC communities. This is what they said -

·       Share what you are doing that you feel hopeful about, and where you
are taking action around climate change.

·       Tell us experiences you have had that have been successful, and
what enabled them to be effective. This history is helpful to us.

·       Sometimes we feel that I have to come up with the answers. We need
you to share the weight of the tasks. Claim the climate fight as fully
yours and not just a young people’s fight, and support others to do the
same.

·       Young people want to talk about taking bold actions, and have
conversations about colonialism and its impacts. Turn up and join in these
conversations, but don’t dominate them.

·       It sometimes seems like older people are giving up and leaving the
actions that are needed to us. Don’t unload desperation and discouragement
on younger people. Our hopeful perspective is not an open invitation to be
cliented at. We are going to be alive longer, but we need to act now,
together.

·       We don’t want to be a spring of hope, we want you to try things as
well.

·       Help address activists internalised oppression, such as differences
of opinion on strategies for action. Then we can prevent disunity.

·       Ask younger activists what they want from you, to support them.

·       Play and have fun in your life, as it helps with connection and
thinking.

Thank you to Karina Vennonen in Australia and Sam Saxe-Taller in the USA,
who are both long time participants in climate change movements.

After some recent discharge I remembered how we can struggle to notice how
good we are as older people, due to ageism. This may also make it feel like
we don’t want to be with other older people. I have been discharging on how
I struggled with seeing the despair of my grandmothers. When I arrive in a
breakout room on Zoom for a mini session and see other older people, one of
my feelings is discouragement. It makes more sense to notice the reality of
what wonderful humans we are.

Dear RCers

It’s great to see RCers planning to attend upcoming large-scale climate actions.  We want to do more and more of this as part of implementing the Unified Goal on the Climate: https://www.rc.org/publication/environment/unified_goal

We want to think about the no-socializing policy as we think about such actions, but I think in most cases it can work to guide us rather than limit us in our actions.  I wrote in detail about “Activism and the No-Socializing Policy” here:  https://www.rc.org/publication/present_time/pt189/pt189_083_ds.  It’s still a good reference.  

I think we will each want to have sessions about what this language in the Unified Goal means for us:

"We in the RC Community commit ourselves to encouraging and supporting every one of us to act against and discharge any distress that might keep us from playing an active role, as large and radical as necessary, to resolve the climate emergency. For most of us, this will involve uniting with others to publicly oppose irrational policies and visibly support rational solutions.”

We will not be inviting each other to join our climate organizations with us, or “huddle” with other Co-Counselors in our climate organization.  

But we can inform each other about our climate organizations (and others)—what they do, who is with us, what a new member can expect.  We can inform one another about important developments regarding the climate emergency and what actions are being taken about it in the world.  

We can organize local projects to “encourage and support” Co-Counselors to become more active in climate organizing with our Regional Reference Person’s approval.  Such actions could include bringing RCers together to attend a climate action.  You could gather and discharge before and after, and have mini-sessions during the event.  Guideline I, Activities Outside the RC Community, addresses this.  https://www.rc.org/publication/guidelines_2022/i02

I would encourage RCers who had other connections to the event to participate through that connection (their organization, friends who are attending) rather than with the RC contingent.  But attending a demonstration together can be a great way to introduce RCers to climate organizing.  

In the article cited above, I talk about issues that will come up and questions that should be addressed in advance.  

Your Area or Region may want to consider forming a local Sustaining All Life project to consider having a presence beyond a single demonstration or action.  If so, please discuss your ideas with your Regional Reference Person and write to Sustaining All Life at sal@rc.org<mailto:sal@rc.org>.  We would love to support you.  

If you are going as a group of RCers, with permission of your RRP, or as a SAL project, please do not plan to get arrested.  The RC Community does not have the resources to help you with all the consequences.  Of course, if you are going alone or with others, that is your choice and it may be a good one.

Dear Climate Coordinators,

I want to build a stronger team in my region to be thinking and moving our work forward on climate and the unified goal.

I’d love to hear how others have built teams and how you structure your work together.

For me it has been good to meet monthly with the ARPs and key climate leaders, with time for discharge, thinking, and planning next steps.

I think I need a group that meets more frequently, to help us put our ideas into action more quickly, and develop our ideas.  I will bring this up at our next regional meeting.

I’d love to hear anything about what you have done to build strong teams.

It was wonderful to join a small group of Jews for a topic group which was
led by Ruth Hartman, at the recent Leaders in the Climate Emergency
Workshop.

Thanks Ruth for encouraging me to post this!

Ruth said some key ways in which we Jews are challenged in leading and
acting in this area:

Antisemitism is discouraging

Ancestral trauma can make us feel hopeless. It's unbearable and can't be
faced or spoken of.

Isolation: feeling we have to fix it alone, and we're probably hated anyway

Urgency so we can't stop for a minute, which can leave us isolated,
discouraged and exhausted.

Racism: historically we were a racialised group. It’s only in recent
generations that some of us fit into the white spectrum. Upward mobility is
connected to racism, and having the trappings: taking on the role of the
middle or owning class. So we've benefited from racism, and it's hard to
look at.

We have our internalised antisemitism, and we can get distracted by
wondering if we're being targeted. Antisemitism is on the rise again as
economic conditions worsen. Antisemitism does come at us.

Ruth reminded us that we are a resilient people, and that we have good
organising skills and experience as well as strong community bases. Justice
and tikkun olam (repair of the world) are key Jewish values.

We discharged together in the group, and shared our thoughts.

As often the sole Jew in climate emergency activities in my life, I am
reminded of the importance of teaching my friends and co-activists about
how antisemitism operates, in order to back me and prevent antisemitism
from derailing our actions for social change.

This is the ‘Ending Antisemitism’ component of the Unified Goal on the
Climate.

its significant rise worldwide, and the divisive role it plays in weakening
liberation work (particularly the fight against racism).*

*We commit to discharging and acting against all antisemitic patterns that
have been installed on us.*

*We will take an active role to ensure that antisemitism is addressed in
all liberation programs and to end the use of antisemitism to disrupt
liberation movements, and the climate movement.”*

Bonjour et merci encore d'être avec nous. Nous avons une autre de nos réunions mensuelles ce week-end.  Voici les dates et les heures :

Dear Climate Coordinators,
 
Happy New Year!  I'm wishing for lots of connection and effective organizing in 2023!
 
A reminder that Janet and I have set the following calls for us to get together (as is useful for you).  The next 2 calls (Saturday, January 7th, 8 - 9:30 PST / Sunday, January 8th, 8 - 9:30 am PST and (Saturday, February 4th, 8 - 9:30 PST /  Sunday, February 5th, 8 - 9:30 am PST)) will be another call to check in, ask questions about the role, and have some time to think about and plan actions you will take.
 
The March call, (Friday, March 3rd, 8 - 9:30 PST and Saturday, March 4th, 8 - 9:30 am PST) Janet will meet with white coordinators, to help you think about how to work together with IPGM.  Diane will work with IPGM on racism and internalized racism they encounter in the role. 
 
ORGANIZER/TECH FOR THESE CALLS IS NEEDED
 
We need an organizer who will organize Zoom tech and send out the reminders.  Could that be you?  Please write Diane if so.  And, if you'd like to help with tech, let me know until we have an organizer. 
 
If more than 25 people are attending the calls regularly, we will start a system of registration, limit the size to 25, and schedule a 3rd call each month.  
 
INTERPRETATION
 
We’re asking people to organize interpretation for yourself, and coordinate with the Zoom tech.

Je vous rappelle que Janet et moi avons fixé les appels suivants pour nous réunir (selon ce qui vous est utile).  Les deux prochains appels (samedi 7 janvier, de 8 à 9 h 30 PST / dimanche 8 janvier, de 8 à 9 h 30 PST et samedi 4 février, de 8 à 9 h 30 PST / dimanche 5 février, de 8 à 9 h 30 PST) seront un autre appel pour faire le point, poser des questions sur le rôle, et avoir un peu de temps pour réfléchir et planifier les actions que vous allez entreprendre.
 
Lors de l'appel du mois de mars (vendredi 3 mars de 8 h à 9 h 30 PST et samedi 4 mars de 8 h à 9 h 30 PST), Janet rencontrera les coordinateurs blancs pour vous aider à réfléchir à la manière de collaborer avec l'IPGM.  Diane travaillera avec l'IPGM sur le racisme et le racisme intériorisé qu'ils rencontrent dans leur rôle. 
 
NOUS AVONS BESOIN D'UN ORGANISATEUR/TECHNICIEN POUR CES APPELS
 
Nous avons besoin d'un organisateur qui s'occupera de la technique de Zoom et enverra les rappels.  Cela pourrait-il être vous ?  Veuillez écrire à Diane si oui.  Et, si vous souhaitez aider à la technique, faites-le moi savoir jusqu'à ce que nous ayons un organisateur. 
 
Si plus de 25 personnes participent régulièrement aux appels, nous mettrons en place un système d'inscription, nous limiterons le nombre de participants à 25 et nous programmerons un troisième appel chaque mois.  
 
INTERPRÉTATION
 
Nous demandons aux personnes d'organiser l'interprétation pour elles-mêmes, et de se coordonner avec le technicien de Zoom.

Hello Climate Emergency Coordinators,

On December 3 and 4, we will be having our first meeting for “Climate Emergency Coordinators.”  You have been proposed (and we think accepted) this role for your Area, Region, Country, or constituency.  Thank you for playing this role.  We hope many more RC leaders will join us.  Here’s how Janet and I are thinking about this role.
 
One of our goals is to bring RCers who have not previously been involved in our work on the climate emergency into this work. Another is to increase the level of activity on climate change in the Areas, Regions, and constituencies (i.e. more classes, support groups, and workshops that address this issue). We want to encourage more people to not only lead these events, but also volunteer to be “coordinators" who will keep the work going and expanding. These “climate emergency coordinators” would be leaders who will encourage and support work on the climate emergency in the Areas, Regions, and constituencies. They would coordinate, but not necessarily lead, activities like support groups, gather-ins, and workshops. 
 
Janet and I will meet with the coordinators monthly for the next year.  Here is our schedule for those meetings:

We know everyone can't make every meeting, and that is fine.  Please attend as many as makes sense for you.  We’re just starting this initiative, so it’s a work in progress and we hope these monthly meetings will be helpful to you in this role.

Bonjour aux coordinateurs d'urgence climatique,

Les 3 et 4 décembre, nous tiendrons notre première réunion pour les "coordinateurs d'urgence climatique".  On vous a proposé (et nous pensons que vous avez accepté) ce rôle pour votre zone, région, pays ou circonscription.  Merci de jouer ce rôle.  Nous espérons que de nombreux autres responsables de CR se joindront à nous.  Voici comment Janet et moi pensons à ce rôle.

L'un de nos objectifs est d'amener les membres du CR qui n'ont pas encore été impliqués dans notre travail sur l'urgence climatique à participer à ce travail. Un autre objectif est d'augmenter le niveau d'activité sur le changement climatique dans les zones, les régions et les circonscriptions (c'est-à-dire plus de cours, de groupes de soutien et d'ateliers qui abordent cette question). Nous souhaitons encourager davantage de personnes à diriger ces événements, mais aussi à se porter volontaires pour devenir des "coordinateurs" qui assureront la continuité et l'expansion de ce travail. Ces "coordinateurs de l'urgence climatique" seraient des leaders qui encourageraient et soutiendraient le travail sur l'urgence climatique dans les zones, les régions et les circonscriptions. Ils coordonneront, mais ne dirigeront pas nécessairement, des activités telles que des groupes de soutien, des rassemblements et des ateliers. 

Janet et moi rencontrerons les coordinateurs tous les mois au cours de l'année prochaine.  Voici notre programme pour ces réunions :

Nous savons que tout le monde ne peut pas assister à toutes les réunions, et c'est très bien ainsi.  Veuillez assister à autant de réunions que nécessaire.  Cette initiative n'en est qu'à ses débuts, il s'agit donc d'un travail en cours et nous espérons que ces réunions mensuelles vous seront utiles dans ce rôle.
