More on Thinking and Identity
I appreciate Leslie’s post about thinking and identity [see the article “Our Identities and Our Thinking,” by Leslie Kausch, on page 47 of Present Time No. 207].
I am a white Catholic middle-class USer and mother. My passion for social justice is fueled by my female and Catholic identities. They have given me access to love for people and the courage to step out of my middle-class comfort zone.
As a middle-class person, I have had access to information—for example, about the climate emergency and the collapse of capitalism, about racism and other forms of oppression—and I’ve learned how to share such information with others (even though what I say is “painted” by my middle-class white U.S. awkwardness and cluelessness, and the struggle to have my voice and be visible as a Catholic female).
I have been given opportunities to connect with people of all backgrounds, which can help me think about making friends with lots of different people.
