The Northern Nigeria Climate Change Workshop
The Northern Nigeria Climate Change Workshop was held in April 2021. Janet Kabue (Area Reference Person for Nairobi, Kenya) led the workshop. She said that we need to do the following to survive the climate emergency:
- Remain connected and stand together as we think about solutions for our continent
- Develop “sustainable rural livelihoods” and a better agriculture system
- Think about food security—we are already vulnerable
- Maintain our soil cover and rotate crops
- Restore our forests (trees absorb carbon dioxide)
- Start to plant trees (no action is small)
- Eliminate coal as our source of energy and replace it with renewable energy—sun, wind, and so on (we have plenty of renewable resources in Africa)
- Push our government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Require that countries that are emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere stop
- Get close with each other to discharge our fears, regain our connection, and show that we care for our continent and ourselves
- Reclaim our connection with nature by visiting the green areas in our country and discharging fear, discouragement, and hopelessness
- Keep reaching for hope
Regarding hope, many people and organizations are doing a lot of things to sustain our environment. Renewable energy is on the rise, and more industries are dropping the use of coal. There is more environmentally friendly transportation. And more and more people are joining the climate movement.
The workshop was a very refreshing “moment.” I loved it!
