About Commitments Towards Re-emergence from Distress

A commitment is a serious promise made by a person (to the counselor, to "nears and dears", to reality, to "God", etc.) to act contrary to one or more rigid distress patterns in every possible way. To repeat these commitments silently may be helpful, to repeat them out aloud is generally more helpful.

It is also helpful at times to follow each repetition of the commitment with a further exploration of the meaning of the commitment or its implications, by saying, "And this will mean _____" and fill in the blank.
