USer Oppressor Patterns
Here is some of what I’ve noticed about USer patterns:
- U.S. RCers post notifications of RC events open only to USers to RC e-mail discussion lists. (People of other countries tend to circulate such information through their relevant local networks.)
- U.S. native English speakers seem to expect non-native English speakers to speak English to them instead of appreciating that non-native English speakers are going out of their way by speaking English, whether limited or fluent, for the U.S. native English speakers’ benefit. Mono-lingual USers often assume that the English language is the only means of interaction with non-English speakers.
- When working with other people, USers tend to be transactional and interested in efficiency instead of taking time to understand where other people may be coming from.
