Help for My Son and Me
I discovered Re-evaluation Counseling about forty-five years ago when my son was eleven years old. As a young Black mother with an autistic child, I was desperate for help. I had exhausted my financial resources on the “mental health” system and gotten little real help beyond “bring him back next week.” My son was being put on ever-increasing dosages of Ritalin to no avail, when a friend introduced me to RC.
Through Re-evaluation Counseling I learned how to listen to my son and was listened to as well. This process helped me to trust my own thinking and discover my strengths as a mother, a female, and a parent. The bonus for me was understanding oppression and learning to navigate an oppressive society so that I could thrive and help others do the same.
