Much of my union work happened in Seattle, so when I was there I would try to see Harvey-meet him for dinner or have some sort of session with him. He would always be upset if he found out I'd had a meeting in town and did not connect with him.

I would counsel with him on how tough it was because I was working with all white men all the time. The company side would be eight or nine white men, and the union side would be five or six white men and me. So it was very helpful to go and get support and good counseling from him, and good thinking.

I was pretty good friends with everybody on the team I was on for the union, and that happened pretty much because of things I learned from Harvey about making friends with white men.
